Shane's
Cancer
Journey

Untitled design - 2021-05-23T144438.967.

“Anyone who imagines that bliss is normal is going to waste a lot of time running around shouting that he’s been robbed. The fact is that most putts don’t drop, most beef is tough, most children grow up to just be people, most successful marriages require a high degree of mutual toleration, most jobs are more often dull than otherwise. Life is like an old-time rail journey…delays…sidetracks, smoke, dust, cinders, and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling burst of speed. The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride.”

About
Thank you for walking with us.

As many of you know, my older brother, Shane, has been diagnosed with cancer. We recently learned that it is an aggressive Stage 4 melanoma that has metastasized to his liver, bones, and brain. The prognosis is not encouraging.

As you would expect, Shane’s severely weakened condition prevents him from working at this time. Because Alicia is Shane’s 24-7 caregiver and will also be caring for the kids, she too has to stop working full-time.

To add to this strange tangle of surprises, just before Shane received his diagnosis Alicia discovered that she is pregnant (due in the new year). This unexpected addition to their family has deepened their need at this moment---Alicia will not be able to return to her demanding line of work (being on-call as birth support and newborn care specialist) until her own baby is several months old.

We anticipate that because Shane's health insurance won't cover all of his medical expenses, with a baby on the way, added to the fact that neither Shane nor Alicia are able to work for the next year, the Fishbein family will need your help financially.  You can donate to their family using the links below.  If you prefer to give another way you can contact Scott Draper here.

My family is so thankful for the prayers and support of every kind that have been offered. Through all this, we have learned more about the goodness of people than we ever knew before. Our gratitude runs deep for all the love and support we have felt. Thank you for your kind words, faith, encouragement, humor, and presence.

Please feel free to share this website with anyone you think would like to know.

Sage on Shane

"He's an extremely powerful example of Christlike love to me, and truly enjoys serving all of those around him. He will always jump at an opportunity to spend time with his loved ones and truly values quality time with Micah and Haven and I."

Micah on Shane

"He's really good at getting things organized, and quickly adapting.  He's very relaxed and calm. I like doing virtually any sport with him.  It's also fun when Mom asks us to put something together and we're just figuring it out. He generally just has a positive influence."

Favorite memory with Shane: rock climbing at Planet Granite

Haven on Shane

"He's very brave and strong.  He's not feeling good and he's being brave about it.  He's really kind.  I feel like he has this nice tone, and he'll do lots of things for us, driving us around even when's he's tired, taking us to different places.  He's really positive and he can move mountains, he can overcome hard things."

Favorite memory with Shane: climbing on the rocks at Tennessee Valley

Alicia on Shane

"I always say that Shane is the best guy in the world and I mean that with all my heart.  In 18 years of marriage, he has never spoken an unkind word to me.  He is patient, full of love, unflappable, thoughtful, and he is faithful and true to his family, his religion, and his friends. And he gives the best, best, best hugs, but he reserves them just for me (wink, wink). He's also an incredible father and the kids adore him (which makes me fall in love with him all over again). I love him dearly, and I'm committed to doing everything in my power to help him heal and return to full strength and vigor."

Favorite memories with Shane: Kayaking on Lake Tahoe, hiking Matt Davis/Steep Ravine to Stinson Beach, steak nachos and salsa de cachuate at Anadale (our comfort food), concerts at the Greek, and anytime I've ever made him laugh (practically an Olympic sport)
